Slumdog Millionaire
January 25, 2009 Note: From now on, i’ll be posting my Bests’ movie reviews which are found in her friendster account. It is with permission of course, hehe. Enjoy
This film is nominated in Oscars as Best Motion Picture, along with other major nominations: Best Film nomination,Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing…
Whether it wins or not for Best Picture , for me, it is a winner. Very great movie. Sa umpisa pa lng, maho-hook ka na kc interesting ang unang eksena. We see Jamal, the protagonist, being tortured by a police official. He just won 10m rupees in Who wants to be a Millionaire and the show host thought he cheated so he was being held and interrogated (read: electricuted/drowned) by the police. He explained to them that he knew all the answers in the questions and continued telling his life story through flashbacks on the events of his life - from childhood to teenager; being a son, a kid brother, a lover…
Little Jamal is so endearing, very cute kid and funny in his own right. I was laughing and rolling on my bed in one scene where he passed through the hole of a makeshift toilet and fell straight into the pool of ebak, para lng makadaan at makita ang idol niyang action star, who happened to be visiting their slum. Hahaha. Jamal was full of ebak all over him yet he went straight to the actor and asked for his autograph. To the disbelief (and horror) of his older brother, Salim.
The film is set in one of the poorest areas in Mumbai. Very familiar ang scenes of squatters, smokey mountains and street children, kasi para ring Pilipinas. SM made me laugh and cry, sniffing and wiping my sipon all throughout. I like the love story, too. Common story it is but it has an element that makes it original.
